Recently, I read this science paper (MIND and Mediterranean Diets Associated with Later Onset of Parkinson’s Disease). I found something i hadn't previously known: evidence suggests that eating a Mediterranean diet can delay the onset of Parkinson's Disease. For example, some items from the diet contain green leafy vegetables, berries, nuts, more fish intake, less red meat, and olive oil. (Typically the healthier meals that doesn't always satisfy our tastebuds like junk food does)
The research found that women who ate a brainy diet called the MIND diet got Parkinson’s up to 17.4 years later than those who didn’t. Similarly, men also benefited from this diet, but not as dramatically as women did. Instead, their brains prefer the Greek version of the Mediterranean diet which encourages similar foods, with a limitation on poultry and a higher consumption of potatoes. This diet in certain individuals showed an onset of 8.4 years. However, ultimately this study suggests that the original Mediterranean diet is more effective in offsetting Parkinson's Disease.
I searched a little more and found that seems like these foods fight off brain inflammation, oxidative stress, and general neuron sadness. These researchers say that it protects the dopamine "factories" in your brain that Parkinson’s Disease negatively engages with.
So my conclusion: it might be time to start on the Mediterranean diet!
